Deadly Silicone Injections: One Woman’s Final Hours

(CBS) The quest for beauty may have proved deadly for a 22-year-old California woman, who died after receiving silicone injections in the buttocks.

Autopsy results are pending, but Mayra Lissette Contreras is believed to have died from respiratory distress, according KTLA-TV in Los Angeles.

“Stories like this are all too common,” New York cosmetic

surgeon Dr. Michael Kane told CBS News. “Every year someone dies in this country from

illegal silicone injections. These buttock injections are usually done

by unlicensed people, because I don’t know any licensed professional who

would inject large amounts of silicone into the body.”

In many cases, underground silicone injectors use industrial, rather

than medical grade, silicone. Moreover, injecting large amounts of

silicone (in the case of breast implants, the silicone is encapsulated)

is dangerous.

The lucky victims develop thick scar tissue, says Kane. The

unlucky ones die, often from a pulmonary embolism, in which silicone

escapes into the bloodstream and causes a clot in the lungs.

Police are looking for two sisters in connection with the case. Investigators say one of the sisters, Guadalupe Viveros, 53, claimed to

be a physician in Mexico, but is not allowed to practice medicine in the

United States, according to KTLA TV.

The women came under investigation after other victims told police they had experienced ill effects after being injected in the buttocks or face. In some cases, the filler had hardened solid, police said according to the station.

Guadalupe Viveros and her sister Alejandra Viveros, 50, jumped bail after being taken into custody on June 21.

If you think you may have been a victim of the silicone sisters, contact detectives at (818) 834-3115.

Fire rips through Texas warehouses; people nearby urged to shelter in place

Nearly 200 firefighters battled a large blaze Thursday at a warehouse complex in Houston that officials said released hazardous materials into the air and forced the evacuation of hundreds of students from a nearby elementary school.

The four-alarm fire, which generated towering plumes of black smoke, began about 10 a.m. at a custom packing and filling company in west Houston.

The Houston Fire Department didn’t immediately say which hazardous materials may have been released during the fire and explosions that rattled the industrial area. City officials issued an alert ordering people in nearby homes and businesses to stay inside, close all windows and shut off air conditioning. No injuries have been reported.

A spokesman for the fire department didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

The name of the business and its owner has not been released.

Authorities have not said what they believe started the blaze, which TV station coverage showed was dying down by about 11:30 a.m. The plumes of heavy black smoke had dissipated and firefighters could be seen spraying white foam around the complex.

About 650 students and 80 staff members at a nearby elementary school were taken by bus to an indoor arena located about seven miles away.

“Right next to (the fire) was Spring Branch Elementary and we needed to get those kiddos out,” said Chuck Brawner, police chief with the Spring Branch school district. Brawner said the elementary school was the only school in that area.

This year at Davos: How “Industry 4.0” affects you

More than 2,500 attendees from around the globe — including world leaders, business executives, heads of NGOs, academics and cultural icons — will gather in the Congress Center in Davos, Switzerland, for the 46th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. The four-day event will kick off on Wednesday, Jan. 20, and finish on Saturday, Jan. 23.

The world is changing rapidly thanks to the technology revolution and that’s having an enormous impact on our lives at work and at home. The engineer and economist Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, said the scale, scope and complexity of this transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced. That is why this year’s theme in Davos is “Mastering the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

Central to the Fourth Industrial Revolution — also known as “Industry 4.0” — is how the speed and breadth of data being transferred around the world forces us to rethink and reimagine every aspect of our lives. We live in a lighting-fast-paced and interconnected environment where changes to technology, politics, demographics and economics can generate global shockwaves in an instant.

“The challenges are as daunting as the opportunities are compelling,” Schwab said of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. “We must have a comprehensive and globally shared understanding of how technology is changing our lives and that of future generations, transforming the economic, social, ecological and cultural contexts in which we live. This is critical, in order to shape our collective future to reflect our common objectives and values.”

Key issues in the 2016 World Economic Forum gathering will include:

How the Fourth Industrial Revolution will transform the healthcare sector, financial services, mobile communications, education and many other industries. How mankind can leverage technology in ways to promote growth for the poor as well as the rich. How breakthroughs in science and technology help solve international public health crises and complex global issues like climate change. How public- and private-sector leaders can better prepare their communities and constituencies for our rapidly changing global security and geopolitical landscape. What does the latest global security picture truly look like in 2016 and beyond? And how can new technologies keep people safe from cyber attacks? How government’s role in this complex, fast-moving world should be redefined to promote transparency in economic, social and environmental reform.

Schwab founded the World Economic Forum in 1971 as the European Management Forum. In the beginning, the mission was to focus on how European companies could adopt some of the management practices found in the United States. The meeting evolved over the years and Schwab’s vision now is to create an environment where global leaders can work together to resolve international conflicts.

Davos has become the place where leaders from many walks of life can share insights and figure out how best to navigate the future. The mission is simple: to improve the state of the world. But of course solving some of these complex issues may seem like mission impossible.

WEF’s co-chairs this year include Mary Barra, CEO of General Motors; Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft; Tidjane Thiam, CEO of Credit Suisse, and Hiroaki Nakanishi, chairman and CEO of Hitachi. The acclaimed cellist Yo Yo Ma will be performing the night before the meeting’s official start to welcome participants to Davos, the home for many during that week in January.

CBS News will be reporting live from Davos the entire week.

Meet the Robot Olympics Winner That Could Save Lives

A South Korean robot smashed through a series of disaster relief tasks faster than competitors, winning its team a $2 million prize at the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robotics Challenge.

With thousands of spectators cheering the 23 robot competitors on at a competition that seemed like the robot Olympics, South Korea’s DRC-Hubo came away as the victor.

The robot swiftly completed eight disaster relief obstacles, including walking through rubble, climbing stairs and turning valves in under 45 minutes to win the top prize.

Members of the Team KAIST from South Korea celebrate after their robot ‘DRC-Hubo’ won the finals of the DARPA Robotics Challenge at the Fairplex complex in Pomona, Calif., June 6, 2015.

The competition was started by DARPA following the 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan, when it became clear robots were needed to complete tasks in disaster scenarios that would otherwise put the health and safety of humans at risk.

The Team Kaist HUBO robot from South Korea climbs out of a Polairs vehicle during the first day of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Robotics Challenge at the Fairplex, June 5, 2015, in Pomona, Calif.

“We heard groans of sympathy when those robots fell,” Gill Pratt, a DARPA program manager said in a statement. “And what did people do every time a robot scored a point? They cheered!”

“It’s an extraordinary thing, and I think this is one of the biggest lessons from DRC — the potential for robots not only to perform technical tasks for us, but to help connect people to one another,” Pratt said.

A Pensacola, Florida, team took home the $1 million second place prize for a robot named Running Man. CHIMP, a robot designed by Carnegie Mellon University’s National Robotics Engineering Center won the $500,000 third place prize.
